Set high above Los Angeles, this Hollywood Hills residence by Scott Mitchell Studio balances monumental scale with a striking sense of calm. Board-formed concrete, steel-framed glass, and cantilevered wood planes shape a sequence of light-filled spaces that open toward the landscape and panoramic city views. Our photography focuses on the tension between weight and openness, capturing the home’s rigorous geometry, rich materiality, and seamless connection between architecture, interiors, and the outdoors. Photographing this Hollywood Hills residence by Scott Mitchell Studio was an exercise in capturing both monumentality and restraint. I focused on how the board-formed concrete, steel-framed glass, and cantilevered wood planes interact with shifting natural light throughout the day. The imagery traces the home’s progression from intimate interior spaces to expansive terraces and panoramic views, revealing an architecture that feels grounded, quiet, and deeply connected to the Los Angeles landscape.

We also wanted to show how the house shifts throughout the day. During daylight it feels bright and calm, and then at twilight it takes on a completely different mood. We spent time outside capturing that transition, where the interior light starts to glow and the exterior feels a bit more atmospheric.

We brought in the homeowners’ dogs in a few moments to make it feel less staged and more like an actual home. Nothing over-directed, just enough to add some life and movement.

Overall it was about showing the contrast, taking something that could feel traditional and heavy and presenting it in a way that feels fresh, light, and lived-in, while still respecting the architecture.
